It was a sunny afternoon, the Sound of the children playing was so loud and all she wanted to do was play, she wanted to play with the children for she was but a child. Mama said you could only play for 5minutes and make sure to drink a lot of water before going out so she did and even though it was for 5minutes she was going to enjoy it. She played for 5 minutes just as Mama said and got back in, watched tv and slept. It was a beautiful night, until it started.

The pain, oh the pain it feels like her bones are grinding against themselves and yet it’s not still a good description of the pain. It hurt so much she can’t sleep, no one can sleep. It was a beautiful day She played for 5minutes She thought it was fine, Mama said it was fine. It was a beautiful night, oh what a beautiful night, oh pain why? This wasn’t the type of pain you could pop in a painkiller for. It was more, so much more. It’s not just about the pain, now the whole house is under a panic, it’s so late no one knows what’s out there. Mama said you just have to hold on my love, just until the sun comes out. It was just 5 minutes, only 5 minutes and Mama said it was okay, even Mama can’t predict when it comes.

She said to herself I drank the water, I stayed hydrated, oh would I rather have stayed in and watch them play from afar. With all the painkillers, she could still feel the pain but finally the sun is up. It wasn’t still safe but it was better. Now we have to drive to the hospital so she could get some relieve. She is being injected, her veins are so tiny, they don’t even help her but she doesn’t feel the pain from the needles, it was a much better pain and at least She gets some relieve. She’s fast asleep, the pain is gone so she thought, until she’s up again, she still feels pain but it’s not as bad.

Eventually she gets better but she’s not herself and she doesn’t even know it, the scars they’re all there, might be hidden but it’s there. She was just starting to live, only but a Child and she was already faced with a fight, a fight for her life, a fight she didn’t choose but she couldn’t afford to lose. Who is she? She’s the girl who misses a lot of classes, the girl who has to work extra hard, she’s the girl who you try to figure out, she’s the girl that has a smile on her face, she’s the girl who has secrets, she hides her weakness so you don’t call her weak. So when you see her don’t treat her like she’s about to die she’s not, don’t make side comments because she hears you, she doesn’t look sickled she’s just fighting sickle cell. She’s a conqueror she’s a SICKLE CELL WARRIOR!!!

So many diseases are preventable sickle cell is one of them, lets spread as much words as we can until awareness gets around. With awareness, it’s one less disease we need to worry about. IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS!!!
